An art gallery that
breaks all the rules

Play is in decline and LEGO are on a mission to bring more of it to the world. To do this, the brand invited parents and kids to reconnect with their super power of play at Superpower Studios, an interactive art gallery where you can touch, create and rebuild the art.

We collaborated with international artists Chen Fenwan, Aurélia Durand, Ekow Nimako and creative advisor, Sarah Andelmann to bring the space to life, ensuring play was at the heart of it. The exhibition was held in the Gaite Lyrique, a cool cultural centre in the heart of Paris

I worked alongside the artists to design the space and shape their ideas for the exhibition space and gallery exterior. My role also involved creating a visual identity and making promotional content with the OLA team to deliver the event.

Aurelia’s “Remix Room”

We created three Art & Design based interactive challenges using Aurelia’s signature style and ensuring the LEGO brand was integrated into the experience.

My storyboards for Aurélia’s Remix Room, an interactive space where you can remix her artwork through touch screen table top challenges.

Visitors create their own phenakistiscopes by adding
Aurelia’s marks and LEGO pieces to their spinning designs.  The visuals created are sent from the table tops to the walls, so visitors can see their art intergrate with Aurelia’s graphic artwork.

Chen’s “Forest of Wishes”

Chen’s art is colourful, positive and joyous. She creates intricate, large-scale botanical paper cut designs. This inspired us to create the Forest of Wishes with her, an interactive experience that  encourages visitors to build their own LEGO ‘seed’ and hang it to a forest of LEGO trees designed by Chen.

I worked with the OLA team to conceptualise and design her space,

Part of the exhibition space required LEGO build areas for visitors to create their ‘seeds’. These are my designs which incorporated Minifigure arms holding LEGO built seed examples created by Chen.

Ekow’s “Mythical Maze”

Ekow uses black LEGO pieces to create his sculptural, Afro futuristic art. We devised a maze of mythical creatures and encouraged kids to build their own.

Minifigure Fabrication

I worked with the LEGO OLA 3D design team to create a Minifigure version of the artists. I sketched out their poses, wardrobe and props to create hi-res 3D visuals that were used throughout the exhibition space and other promotional content.

Visual Identity

I worked with the OLA design team to create a fun, playful visual identity that encouraged kids to use their superpower of play, whilst remaining rooted in the LEGO brand.

Using the LEGO brick Clutch System, a graphic representation of the LEGO product, we created a suite of graphics that were used across the exhibition itself, the building exterior and event promotion on digital platforms.
